Over the years, India has been exporting many Agro Products moderately in addition to meeting
the requirements of huge and increasing population. Although, India mainly produces Rice,
Wheat, Sugarcane, Pulses, Vegetables, Fruits apart from Dairy and Aqua products
considerably, there is vast scope for exploring many new areas in Agri and related Food
Processing Sector. Exports, however, brings both higher income to the farmer and valuable
foreign exchange to the country.
Due to few inherent reasons like lack of proper research and new technology, exports were restricted to largely food grains, semi processed and small percentage of fully processed products. But, export of Agricultural commodities has helped producers to take advantage of wider international market which has helped not only farmers in earning better returns but also processing units in increasing the total volumes of sales and gaining higher profits.
As per available statistics, the share of India’s Agricultural exports and imports in world Agri trade was only 2.4% and 1.7% respectively. Thus, there is long way for India to to become one of the major International trader in Agri commodities. As one may appreciate that by considering large area of cultivable land available in the country and favorable climatic conditions through out the year, India has tremendous potential In increasing the production levels of variety of crops, dairy, poultry, seafood, etc., It is noteworthy to observe that exports during 2021-22 has reached Rs. 3,74,611 crores with an increase of 20.8% as compared to previous year which is an encouraging sign for exporters. Export Promotion Agencies like APEDA and various commodity based export promotion councils have been striving hard to facilitate exporters and same may have to be continued vigorously by providing market data, assisting in Supply Chain & Logistics, obtaining higher prices and attractive incentives, guiding in legal issues, etc., It is hoped that exports would definitely increase with the growing international market and consequently Indian farmer would get higher returns for his yield.
